We have been privileged to be able to offer a variety of internship experiences for students. There is one application that can be used to apply for any of these internships. Please rank the opportunities for which you would like to be considered on the application. Below are this year's internship projects.

Kendal at Oberlin
Health Services Administrator Internship
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Chief Health Services Officer in finalization of policies and procedures in accordance with newly revised Medicare Rules and Regulations.
  • Help implement Corporate Compliance activities through eight major departments.
  • Learn to use the new Kendal intranet software program.
  • Take responsibility for, implement, and document Corporate Compliance training.
  • Compare policy templates that meet federal regulations to Kendal at Oberlin’s policies and procedures.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain understanding of Corporate Compliance.
  • Gain skills in policy and procedure software.
  • Establish relationships with interdisciplinary team members.
  • Develop organization, writing and implementation skills.

Dementia Focused Programming Internship
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Kendal at Oberlin’s Early Learning Center Director with enriching the intergenerational opportunities between the Kendal at Oberlin residents and the preschool members.
  • Use understanding of dementia/cognitive loss to engage residents in purposeful activities.
  • Establish relationships with residents to engage in meaningful interactions.
  • Take responsibility for program implementation, documentation of results and writing weekly progress reports.
  • Participate in team planning to meet program objectives.
  • Design, develop and coach individuals for success in their individualized interventions.

 Learning Objectives:

  • Learn to verbalize how dementia/cognitive loss affects memory and what can be expected from individuals with different types of dementia/cognitive loss.
  • Gain interviewing skills and the ability to meaningfully analyze the conversations.
  • Work with an interdisciplinary team to implement a questionnaire on how they see their Well-Being, and use this information to implement programming to increase well-being for those who indicate areas of concern.
  • Develop organization, writing and implementation skills.

Chandler Hall
Digital Marketing and Social Media Intern
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with digital marketing to refine social media strategy and best practices.
  • Manage social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, Yelp, Google Business, Caring.com, etc).
  • Prepare weekly updates and reports to track growth and success of campaigns.
  • Keep up-to-date and informed on new social media trends and communicate to the Director to adapt accordingly.
  • Assist with website copywriting, proofing and updating as needed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how to use content marketing to bring in new leads and convert those leads to move-ins and admissions.
  • Gain understanding on how to develop a digital marketing program.
  • Develop the ability to work on an interdisciplinary team.
  • Gain the ability to execute proper messaging with organizational goals.

Life Enrichment Intern
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development of dementia-based resident programs for residents and clients of Chandler Hall.
  • Perform initial research of the regulatory requirements and best practices for activity programming in nursing homes, adult day and personal care.
  • Assess compliance of current programming with regulations and best practices.
  • Assist with information for meetings with employees, families and residents about programs and adjust plans as appropriate.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn to trial-and-adjust programming to resident’s needs.
  • Develop oral and written communication methods, including presentation and interviewing skills.
  • Gain an understanding of dementia-based training programs.
  • Actively work and engage with interdisciplinary care teams.

The Hickman
Human Resources Internship
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Help update/input changes to the employee handbook
  • Create new hire orientation materials.
  • Help create a fire safety video for new hire orientation and staff training, including handout(s).
  • Participate in organization-wide training, including elder care, dementia, fire safety and drills and leadership.

Learning Objectives:

  • Enhance organization skills while learning to meet deadlines.
  • Observe and participate in business operations and decision-making.
  • Gain confidence in communication while working with many department heads and staff.
  • Explore working in various capacities in an administrative office atmosphere.
  • Acquire an appreciation for the needs and strengths of our older population while building cross-generational connections with others.

Friends Village at Woodstown
Assisted Living Internship 
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create a “Hospitality Program” that incorporates the various services offered to Assisted Living Residents.
  • Observe the components of the work that is done within the departments of Assisted Living including dining, life enrichment, nursing, housekeeping, transportation, social work and marketing.
  • Attend departmental and senior team meetings.
  • Develop, implement and analyze specific programs and projects.
  • Create reports and present at meetings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the operational aspects of hospitality in a resident-centered environment extending beyond medical care.
  • Develop successful oral and written communication methods.
  • Actively work and engage with an interdisciplinary team to promote professional growth and development.
  • Learn fiduciary responsibility of a business.
  • Acquire understanding of the influence of culture and values and the operational setting of a not-for-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community.

Marketing Internship
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in promotional, sales and fundraising events, tasks and activities.   
  • Observe the components of the work that is done within a marketing and mission support department
  • Attend departmental and senior team meetings
  • Develop, implement and analyze specific programs, projects and events as determined by the CEO, Director of Human Resources, and Department Supervisor
  • Create reports, present at meetings

Learning Objectives:

  • Expand knowledge with respect to connecting a Continuing Care Retirement Community to the surrounding region through electronic and in-person communications.
  • Engage the student in the development of new strategies and initiatives with opportunities to assist with the implementation of each.
  • Understand the work that is done within the marketing and mission support department. 
  • Develop successful oral and written communication methods.
  • Actively work and engage with an interdisciplinary team to promote professional growth and development.

Friends Home in Kennett
Administration Internship
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with establishing goals and timelines within each department to meet the required benchmarks.
  • Work with the Executive Director  as a liaison between departments to reach community goals.
  • Develop internal evaluation process to assess the community’s readiness to request site visit by the Center for Applied Research in Dementia (CARD).
  • Communicate with CARD to facilitate site visit and ensure the community is ready
  • Once certification obtained, work with ED and Marketing Director for Public announcement and community outreach.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain exposure to the necessary steps in obtaining a campus-wide certification.
  • Learn to work on an interdisciplinary team and interact with all department heads and staff to coordinate the effort.
  • Develop successful oral and written communication methods.
  • Enhance organization skills while learning to meet deadlines.

Foxdale Village
Human Resources Internship
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in creation of short videos to cover topics required in the first 48 hours after hire.
  • Help the Human Resources team assess the current orientation process and make suggestions to update and streamline the process.
  • Work with staff from various departments to coordinate, film and edit videos on the compliance topics of Residents Rights, Resident Abuse and the code of conduct.
  • Shadow various roles across any department at Foxdale Village and participate in organization-wide trainings - including nursing, elder care and leadership.

Learning Objectives:

  • Critical thinking while organizing and scheduling a real-world project.
  • Experience working collaboratively with subject-matter experts.
  • Organization in handling multiple priorities and demands.
  • Sharpen communication skills while working with many department heads and staff.

Health Services Internship
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work alongside the Social Service Department and participate in day-to-day responsibilities and tasks.
  • Help the Director of Social Services move the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) committee into the shared electronic tracking system PointClickCare (PCC).
  • Responsible for meeting with each QAPI committee member to help set up and establish goals.
  • Spend time shadowing other leaders in the organization and participate in organization-wide trainings - including nursing, elder care and leadership.

Learning Objectives:

  • Critical thinking while organizing the QAPI process
  • Hands-on experience working with line staff members within a healthcare/long-term care environment
  • Explore working in various capacities in health services from line staff to administration
  • Understanding the different demands in each level of the organization and learning balance between these levels to achieve improved services for residents
